Women’s Strategy:

The National Strategy is aiming at boosting the woman’s status to enable the community realize comprehensive rebirth, and unleash the women’s energies to push ahead the ongoing renaissance, renewal and construction, and allow women participate fairly in work, production and publication.

 

Aims According to Priority:

  1. Women are to be given an advanced priority of qualification and satisfaction of needs.
  2. Support woman sector and unleashing their energies in their capacity as essential human resources in the national comprehensive development.
  3. Up-grading the woman’s task in the community and adopting policies that go in line with the significance of such function.

 

The main programmes:

  1. Organizing women in unions, associations and societies.
  2. Promotion of women’s role in the various aspects of life and these programmes can be executed through the sectors of promotion programme of woman’s role as mothers wives, housewives, agriculture and industrial workers, civil and private sector employee and promotion programme of woman’s role in political work and defending the homeland against aggressions.

 

The Sudanese Women General Union:

It is a voluntary organization, which is concerned with women to carry out their ultimate role in social development projects. Despite novelty of its inception in 1990, the union has scored the following achievements:

  1. Changed the poster of the Sudanese woman and the nation as well.
  2. Guaranteeing sustainability of woman’s organizational activity which had been relaying on seasonal works.
  3. Maintaining the unity of the community-woman and putting-putting into account woman’s special role.

The Union is the Umbrella for Woman’s involvement in all the public activities and bears the greatest parts in planning, mobilization, organization and work for the development of women in cooperation with woman specialized organizations and social ministries…etc. with aim of involving the Sudanese woman in external and internal activities.

 

The Union Structure:

The Union is composed of the general secretarial and other nine specialized secretarial which are: The Political, Social, Economic, Education, Training and Up-grading, Culture and Information and Public Relations, States Coordination, Financial and administrative and external relations secretariats.

Sudanese Woman General Union (Congress System):

It represents all the Sudanese women in 26 states. Each state is composing of a number of provinces and in each province and rural council there is a branch woman union. In other words, there are 12,000 woman unions in all the states.

 

The Union’s Performance in the light

Of the National Comprehensive Strategy:

All the Union’s Secretariats at all levels are abiding and tracing the National Comprehensive Strategy in addition to the Union’s strategy and programms.

 

Social Secretariats’ Performance:

The social secretariats in both the center and the states are concerned with social activities, which are regarded as the pillar of the social transformation, which in turn leads to the civilizational project. The period from June 1994 – February 1995 was determined and chosen to asses the performance of the secretariats. The Secretariats have carried out the following achievements:

19 mass marriages, 66 cases of male group circumcision, 178 convoys of the mujahideen’s food supplies, 84 programe for female inmates, 39 centers for easing living costs, 14 disaster control programmes, 29 hospital visits, 8 child carnivals, 2251 Al-Humaira Councils, 478 symposiums and lectures, 56 cooperatives, 22 Eid Happiness exhibitions, 43 programmes for the martyrs’ families, 3822 subsidized shopping fairs, 31 programes for the displaced, 844 kindergartens, 3141 fast breaking banquets and 1677 intellectual symposia.

 

Health Activities:

Concerning health activities, the secretariats have scored the following:

  1. First aid (3629).
  2. Environmental hygiene programmes (727).
  3. Midwifery Centers (14).
  4. Guidance and education programmes (439).
  5. Vaccination campaigns (133).
  6. Harmful habits control and health up grading programs (101).
  7. Midwives’ training sessions (17).

 

Education:

Concerning informal schooling, the states have opened illiteracy eradication classes and Quranic schools (Khalwas) for women. The following figures explain number of classes, Khalwas and kindergartens established by the Sudanese Women General Union in January 1995:

  1. 7770 Illiteracy eradication classes.
  2. 3830 kindergartens.
  3. 272 Khalwas for women.

 

Performance of the Political Secretariats

During October 1992 – October 1995:

The Sudanese Women Union’s Secretariats have got concerned during this period with the organization of conferences in all the states and formation of woman sector and preparation for the general election in all the state constituencies. Thus, the Union has attacked a large number of active women through its political programmes; that is to say the majority of the Sudanese women are backing the National Salvation Revolution. In addition to the political mobilization programme, the political secretariat have followed the developments at the political landscape which required issuance of communiques or sending of cables or organization of processions (condemnation of the Population conference held in Cairo, the Ibrahimite massacre committed by the Israelis, the Gasper Bero’s report). The Union organization other processions to celebrate restoration of towns in the south.

Regarding the Union’s Societies, associations and clubs, the secretariats has established associations of female innovators, presswomen and business women clubs and the women society in south Kordofan…etc.

 

 

THE SUDANESE WOMEN’S

GENERAL UNION (SWGU)

Goals and Objectives :

  1. Caring for Women, addressing their issues and ensuring that their concerns are heard.
  2. Catering for the education of young generations.
  3. Encouraging women to participate in the public, political, economic and social work.
  4. Focussing on education, eradication of illiteracy and boosting the economic and political activity especially in rural areas.
  5. Adopting women’s views in the various issues and presenting them to the decision-makers.

SWGU’s Structure :

The Union is composed of secretariats elected through conferences organized at the grassroots level (village and quarter) and at the level of localities, provinces and the States. It has also a national secretariat and an advisory council, which includes academic institutions. The Union has 16,000 branches distributed in 26 states.

 

Membership of the Union :

SWGU’s membership is open for every Sudanese woman of 18 years of age or above.

 

The Union Activities :

  1. The Union has classes meant for the eradication of illiteracy and the education of young girls in all the states of Sudan.
  2. It publishes a weekly newspaper (Noun) and a monthly magazine (Usrati, i.e. My Family) as well as radio programe (Nafizat Al-Mara, i.e. Women’s Window).
  3. The Union works for deepening the peace culture and inter-religious dialogue among women.
  4. It offers prizes in the various fields of innovation and arts to encourage women especially in the field of rural development.
  5. It also acts as a guarantee for women before donors and creditors of productive families’ programmes and income-generating programmes intended to fight poverty and improve the living conditions of the people.
  6. The Union organizes seminars, workshops, symposiums and straining courses to raise awareness among women at the grassroot level and draw their attention to their role.
  7. It also organizes competitions and contests, which display women’s talents in the various fields.

International Muslim Women Union

 

Joining the international effort to up-grade women general standard and to increase the degree of awareness, an International Muslim Women Union has been established on 3rd August 1996.

 

Objective and Nature:

The International Muslim Women union is an international Islamic, non-governmental, independent organization, with its head quarter in Khartoum, Sudan.

 

Objectives:

  1. Integrating the Muslim Women through cultural exchange programs, conferences, meetings and unified work.
  2. Dissemination of Islamic awareness among Muslim women, guiding them to develop the Muslim woman’s identify and enabling them to voice their message throughout the world.
  3. To help Muslim women to overcome injustices and to emancipate them from all degrading practices incompatible with religious value.
  4. Strengthening the bonds of co-operation, benevolence, compassion and mutual assistance among women’s all over the world.
  5. Promoting the intellectual standards of Muslim women, and increasing their distinguished intellectual distribution to the perception of Islam and endeavoring to bring about awareness amongst women all over the world.
  6. Deep concern about Muslim affairs and humanity at large, working towards the dominance of the values of justice, equity, equality and upright conduct; furthermore rejecting of discrimination, oppression and war, and working towards dissemination of culture of dialogue, fraternity, love and equity.
  7. Providing a strong voice to reflect the Muslim women’s views and conceptions in all issues and represent them in all international organization, association and women forms.

 

Means:

In order to achieve its objectives, the union shall take all legal means such as:

  1. Provision of scientific studies and field surveys and gathering of information and statistical data necessary for implementation of the policies, plans and programs to willing donors.
  2. Establishment of commercial and investment projects to increase the resources of the union and its international and regional affiliates and provision of all type of feasibility studies which enable the pursuance of such projects.
  3. Issuing of pamphlets and books and establishing of libraries within different sectors to promote understanding and awareness of issues related to the union’s objectives.
  4. Utilization of audio-visual, printed matter and modern technology for assimilation and dissemination of the intellectual contribution.
  5. Sending teams and groups equipped with demonstrating means addressing different levels of understanding.
  6. Utilization of any possible means that would help in the progress of Muslim women and women all over the world in all spheres.

 

Institutions of the Union:

The governing institutions of the union are the General congress (The supreme authority of the union that convenes every three years) its membership composed of representative of organizations, individuals who accept the objectives to the union and from participation of International figures.

 

The Board of Trustees:

The Board of Trustees consist of sixty able and distinguished members who believe in the objective of the union.

Meetings once every year, the B.T. has held its accepted distinguished women as honorary members.

 

The General Secretariat:

The General secretariat is the super operational institution of the union. It is headed by the Secretary General, and is consisted of twelve members who assist the Secretary General and are called:

Seat of the Union:

The union has its seat in the Sudan as its headquarters and center for the General Secretariat.

 

Project:

International Muslim Women Union (IMWU) proposed studied projects that can be implemented in the different region of its activities:

  2. Media Women’s League.
  3. Information Bank.
  4. Food for All.
  5. Mother and Child Health Project.
